I've really been slack about my posts. I've been WAY too busy with home and family projects.
Here are some pics of our last reenactment down at Fort de Chartres this past April. It was a great event and we were able to add a wonderful new family to our camp; John, Angie, Joel and Joshua. We were truly blessed to be with them.
One of the best things that stands out about this camp was the food. We had pheasant, dove, salmon, sauage, bacon, veggies, fried apples, blackberry cream pie and more! I left casting a larger shadow than when I arrived.
Another neat thing was that Logan got to do the auctioneering at the auction. He did a fantastic job.
I can't wait for our next camp meeting!

This lanterns is special. It's one I just recently made for my wife. Of all the lanterns I've made, she's never had one of her own to decorate and that suited her. So, I was able to get some scrap walnut boards from my dad and started buiding only the second lantern that I've made with a front door. What was neat was the different colors of wood within the walnut. It took me 2-3 times longer to build than a normal lantern but I think it turned out pretty well. I finished it with an old furniture oil that my wife's dad had called "Powder House". It really made the grain "pop". I don't think I'll be making another one like this very soon. :-)

Had a great time at the annual Deer Expo that my sister and brother-in-laws church puts on in Pittsfield IL. It's always the Wednesday night before the first deer shotgun season and caters to the hunters. It's a great ministry and my first time to set my Bibles For The World/Lanterns of Light table up. Selling is not allowed but I made some good contacts and loved talking with the people....and there was a LOT of people! I was able to hand out a few Bibles, business cards and ran out of gospel tracts. As usual, the kids keep coming back for more. The tracts from Livingwaters are the best ever.
Here are some pics of the event.

There were a lot of firsts for me this time.
It was the first time I got to tent camp with some new friends named Logan, Dillon and Zack. They are a great bunch of guys and a joy to be around. My normal camping buddies, Dale, Simeon and Brooke were there too. I can’t say enough about what good friends they are. I look forward to many more camps with or new formed group again.
It was also the first time that I had camped in temperatures that got below freezing! Friday night, when we arrived, they were out of firewood. We’re not allowed to bring our own in but Dale and I had not had supper yet and it was getting much colder after dark. Finally, about 8:00 a load of wood arrived and they, thankfully, dumped it just a few yards from our campsite. Dale and I cooked fresh trout on a flat rock and it was late when we turned in.
Saturday night is when we got the really hard frost. There was a heavy fog in the morning. At least we had enough wood to keep everyone warm around the fire. The one picture is a guy trying to brush his teeth.

It was the first time that I got to hang my business shingle on its new hanger. We were camped back only the levee, away from most the vendors, but I believe that the sign helped to draw attention to my lanterns and my dad’s totes he had made. I was able to get rid of all my lanterns but one!

A lot of good memories were made this weekend. We had four guns made by Jackie Brown in our camp; a smooth rifle 20 gauge of Dales, a smooth rifle 28 gauge of Simeon’s, a 20 gauge fowler of mine plus a .45 caliber pistol. The fowler is not finished yet so will be a good winter project of me.

I’ll not forget the three younger guy’s tent almost going up in smoke. The rear door flap caught fire from being too close to the stove pipe. We got it put out before too much damage was done.

Dale led our Sunday service and he really did a great job. Talking about God’s blessings and how He has worked in the lives of our fore fathers is always great. We want to make that a permanent feature of our future camps.

This was really one of the better events that I’ve been to. The food was great, we had guests to our camp, we froze to death, fun with good friends and we picked up some new gear! Plus, I sold some lanterns(the proceeds from these will go to help with the medical clinic expenses that Bibles For The World just finished).
They put on a Woodswalk event as well and hopefully by next year we can have a team to participate. That will be another first!

You can follow the link to the right under my listed emails, called grouprev, for information about how to do it. This link is for use with a credit card only. If you wish to send a check directly to me, please send me an email. I am at $200 towards my goal of $500 at present.
Thank you for helping to send God's gospel around the world!
Our Lord and King, first served,
Mark

It was great not having to tear down and set back up each day. I also had some great neighbors around me.
We had three days of fantastic weather and a large crowd was on hand this year. When business was slow on Saturday, I went out on the grounds and did some "town crying". Not sure if it worked but business seemed to pickup shortly after. It could have been that it was approaching dinner and the ham and beans drew them my way, since our booths were right next to the kitchen!
My parents had a spot outside to sell assorted wood products and odds and ends.
I made some great contacts and sold a few lanterns. My granddaughter, Julia, helped me hand out gospel tracts. She was a big help.
This is beoming one of my favortite events. I may do things a little different next year and hope to have a peddlers cart to move my wares around the grounds instead of being restricted to one place. We'll see.
Here's some pictures of the event. Until our Lord's return, I remain,
Mark Bentley

Well, I actually think I do have a good excuse for being so far behind on posting to this blog. The Prairie Land Heritage Steam Show is coming around again at the end of this month and I’ve been very busy preparing for it. I’ve been trying to get my new business shingle made, renovating our old house plus, trying to increase my inventory of lanterns.
Here are two pictures of the Lanterns of Light shingle. The short one will be used at outdoor events and the porch post will be utilized at indoor events. I have three special people to thank for helping turn the sign into reality.
The sign was actually designed by a Christian friend named Ken P. He also helped with the same design for my business card. By the way, the business cards were also printed by a good friend named Greg T.

The above picture was taken in front of my new woodworking shop that I hope to be making the lanterns in soon. The red bench will be repainted to match the house color.
The sign was painted by my son-in-laws mother Mary Jo S. And the hangers were made by a Christian blacksmith named Don A. The lantern on top of the porch post has a battery operated candle that flickers. It all breaks down for easy transport.
I am so grateful for all the time, money and effort they donated in doing such a great job with it. I’m anxious to display it indoors at the Steam Show.

I’ll be posting pictures of the show after it’s over and hopefully in good time. Pray that things go well for my family and me at the event. Also, please pray that people will be interested in BFTW and sponsoring some children in India. But, most importantly that they will take some tracts, see their need for the Savior, and give their lives to the Lord.
Till next time,
Our Lord and King first served.

These lanterns are made of Ash and were cut out of the same board. I wanted them to be a matched pair yet somewhat like bookends so one has a lifting dowel in the left rear corner and one in the right rear corner. The wood grain was excellent with both of them and Greg’s family was very pleased with how they came out. So was I.

But, here it is. It’s one that our friends Bud and Barb bought. They wanted one that was a lighter shade of stain than I normally use to go with their home decor.
This is the glass lift model that is made of Ash with rounded corners. I put a mirror in the back and also a paraffin candle instead a grungy one. The wood knots look nice, but, this had to be one of the hardest lanterns I’ve ever made, I think, due to them. I had the worst time getting the glass to lift right.
But, it turned out pretty good I think.

I had not camped over night at this event before so I was excited about it. My friends Dale and Simeon, with Simeons lovely daughter Brooke, would be camping as well with me. I took my diamond tent and Simeon had his.

Dale and I arrived on Friday morning shortly after Simeon and Brooke. It was "School Day" at the fort and many buses of school kids arrived to check out the living history. This is a juried event that depicts life on the frontier between 1760 & 1780.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiw-eECspz_OXPs_KDFSBMNF9LyC53lPsruPBLP3cq0vW8aEeW2CTklL4kP2NbwwTNVnb8lAFkqPoX6xYIb5aRhRQMUjWL-DCypJoWiTnD5Mi60EGNbuEi-tENKq_WWX1P7C4kOULn_Iy0/s320/Dale+%2526+Kathy.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5733289311712460402" />
Dale was especially excited about the event because he was going to be picking up his new coat made by our good friend Kathy. It looked great and was a blue version of mine.
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0jT36KH626moL6xklpni_BAiEVJGx3aM43fyxIuTYVFBPu-1a4eaRGqn23Yxn9VR7RCA2MsrMDTmjY8QUy5VmFh9VSuNuQn6XgfcsVYcfAkM_8nWLzDDvVOTdzXZcXsdRZ-kOkJmHTHI/s320/DSC07185.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5733292236525111042" />
Friday night Simeon and Brooke had to leave but would be back the following day and spend the night. Dale and I cooked pheasant on the spit and it was really good. One of our neighbors gave us a loaf of bread and I imagined this might have been like what the children of Israel experienced with quail and manna in the wilderness.

We slept fairly well Friday night on top of our lose stray even though it was a tad bit chili. We had pitched our tents out in the front of the fort gate so we did not hear too much of all the night time activities taking place within the fort. All in all, it was a pretty pleasant night.

I had to leave the next morning early to get back for my grand-daughters first birthday party. It was great being at the fort again and meeting old friends. I look forward to going back for the Summer event.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 299px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1dAcuJyAxvEfUsbCyNLHVllRyl_vRsA-uNYLyt1rNZI2GkZ7D7Wl87XImLsrnsbiM6Y_i5Z4QwMgEQZZOTj_0wE8aZd_lX6-8NieOXo20Mm_AJ_FV-fjs_IP-33QCm4IkCOee4x6q9r8/s400/gentlemen+hunters1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5733292894713138738" />Mark Bentleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09779608399088295635noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7058400741289947720.post-43274160508930243162012-04-03T18:07:00.002-05:002012-04-03T18:10:48.472-05:00April Lantern Highlight #36/11<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMu-pF-thdd3NaabEm9L6RM2MOgYIBLjtwan-cvdTbkjRloBj3FdslOAb4L440mTPK9ozXa61XeFNxJE2NWIRZpmKeLEnWM_AxfnvPQ5DwjgwSMDXi4gDPb7BT4xmRimn1FWEBx9LGv_0/s400/%25233611a.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5727315669962422482" />This month’s lantern highlight is a lantern that I gave as a wedding gift to my friend Tiffany and her husband Joseph. It’s made of clear pine and has rounded edges. It also has a paraffin candle in a wooden bowl holder that is raised by a dowel rod. A leather thong is used for a handle. A light brown stain gives it color. Not that any of them are worthy of much praise but it will help give everyone some idea of the styles of lanterns I make. I tell people that each lantern is a “one of a kind” because each one has its own individual flaw somewhere on it. <img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiH1uvxulvE68RgfUxwNdFdudRpkG34TM9UklEjWifZC2wA_NRPzzOhvBF3206snPrlDw1S7cUtIzaTtUB-TZfWf0-5_HNdsQmARu5Hi_dANzpJFO13iwmIneHU3-0ndgADmfmaeW4RMTU/s400/%25235612c.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5723142346816816418" />
The pine wood grains don’t jump out at you the way the hardwoods do once the stain is applied so I’ll try and pick lanterns that have some nice grain design or other unique characteristics.

This month I’ll show you #56 which I just completed. The wood is clear pine but this lantern is only the second one I’ve made that utilizes a glass door that lifts up thru the top. The corners have been rounded and I also put a copper heat deflector on it. When I fashion the copper pipe candle holder I break off two tabs that I then try and utilize for the lifting glass handle. It’s finished off with a twisted wire handle.

This is the second of three styles that I have in the works to offer for sale. I hope to add more someday. This lantern sells for $30 and all the profit goes to Bibles For The World and their Child Sponsorship Program.

Our Lord and King, first served,

MarkMark Bentleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09779608399088295635noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7058400741289947720.post-82339865495870911862012-02-28T13:19:00.021-06:002012-02-28T13:45:24.617-06:00Fort Du Bois<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIVx2ELAdaIf9rkT2ydySt9LVUxoBKdfytSrfQw0a-73CA7X4iKc9-Z4X25bfs1dxj-qiMm09l1xbGUE_O2kWdvrD9WscIV02TB2ACuTcS9AUV9hwpolLsNzkpA0GwsKxSG3UZOi2nQZ0/s400/DSC06838.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5714272918586979218" />
This past weekend, I was invited to a private reenactment at Fort Du bois in Wood River, Illinois. A stockade linked each corner cabin and they were made up of a room with a table and fireplace, plus a room that had four bunk beds, so eight people could occupy each cabin. <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiG5Udgve7vvq9tei0irrXXX07tCMYFvm03tTnXEaQJzxWCjLMEipKDNPKqBaGV9F8__Pss8e2N9jn15WZvSuryaNtZBkyW8j0CspeCzFWJ6El3RFcem7tHU4A2BQ5qQTQSpJov27Djnwc/s320/DSC06850.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5714272521100947634" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEju4mki01cQ8LGPwM7zhIkxbtlF3Q5OK6E5n94-dvJzaGEPQ9DptgMZlN_IDtffz-ItJ9zhXIsTU3Hfz_Q92qmDKYuyDZA3ekZ_wfnF4K9Lww6Mw3xJDqag2snCJnMGcxiw5GRJhQh9EF0/s320/DSC06818.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5714272105591011186" />We passed all our gear in thru the outer window of our cabin since it was easier than packing everything around thru the front gate. The night was pretty chilly so we got a fire going in the fire place as quickly as we could. Simeon, Dale and I each chose a top bunk and got our gear laid out.<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhebVtcn3efMkHiYnRO1H1RdXQwe3uxxXXskw0i8pDwXCPY_nCkVxLYl_WFIT0oDBm7x5ymcn_HxFA3M5UI7Tsys_ahvlQhnzkS-UhTqKZNgkcNVsaiAZHL38cntaxV8CPx1iiBqMuXBpo/s320/DSC06814.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5714271799315086498" />
The bad thing about the cabins was that the heat from the fire had a hard time passing thru the doorway that led to the bunk room. It got down to about 27 degrees and I was chilled most of the night. From where I slept, or tried to sleep, I could see the glow of the fire on the ceiling rafters. I knew about 1:30 in the morning that the fire was about out when no reflection was on them. I got down and coaxed the fire back to life. I did the same at around 5:30. By that time I decided I might as well stay up.
Eventually, Dale and Simeon got up and we fried up some ham steaks for breakfast. We’ve made ham steaks before many times at events and you just can’t beat them for flavor, especially after you’ve dropped them in the fire ashes..<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMtqcvACTiYh-m2byACuu5VKehxiH2E2OP80GxTX41Ku3KnPvSN2SK2IdFI4m9KtCQ8_u6MjE5qjFpciYCZDQDeZ7gJedOQvOI3joLvGh-QMAOZD4Zypbt2y97HMSh23JO9-e5Jd8lPlQ/s320/DSC06826.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5714271300184460530" />
They are best with some biscuits enveloping them but we didn’t have the blessing of biscuits this day.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4r01-u8RLY0Ym1Pvnj_938cjqigK8vA5nzlxBMhyRzncaU97CxYMZZZodpaQP5-WFUpA4kLlbyqUc5kkXL7IeL0z5kZOnGSXNIQQnQcwZj3dgyqKwsQNwtCeoduAOBnyvtD-1G7ftg08/s320/DSC06846.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5714271052298403810" />A fellow reenactor friend of ours, Gordon and his wife Donna, arrived Saturday morning and Gordon put on a small seminar on building a ground loom, fire starting and also his master bow making skills. They actually live just a few blocks from my house and we’ve been to many events together.

I took some of my lanterns but never really got the opportunity to sell any. But, I did get the opportunity to try out different ones in our cabin. I got to see how my candles burned; comparing burn time and brightness. The grungy style that I use does have a longer burn time but does not put off but about half the light of the typical wax candles.

Saturday, afternoon we had a shooting demonstration and I let a number of guys shoot my flintlock. Thankfully, it fired the majority of the time. Simeon even hit the target with it.<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8wWIBCsBEJhY0OZ7xyrx4MpycssGUGOTZKmckIOZ3SMCZqpN0AY6UHytOQ3CXGKcK3YszwDAau1VWfIF6R3R77vxN3RmdBiwZ9XArtVCzSCXQACdRjuAxVWhWMXXqh6sJ2n6XSzAA8ic/s320/DSC06870.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5714270501959835730" />
I got to meet some Christian brothers there that I had never met before and I believe it turned out to be a great event. The suddenness of the drawing in of the winter evenings seems to be much more rapid than the gradual, long lightening of the evenings once we get into the New Year. As we reach December, light is in short supply. Reliable electricity is so much part of our lives that we probably struggle to recall experiences of how dark the nights can be. Camping far from a town or staying somewhere without electricity gives us a clue. Those with long memories may go back to the city-wide power-cuts in the 3 day week of the early 1970's or even the wartime blackout. When everything is dark, a candle or torch seem very puny against the surrounding darkness. Yet even a candle is a great improvement on complete darkness.

No wonder the image of light is so powerful. Light is opposed to darkness. Light is associated with life and joy rather than sorrow, death or disaster. When a light shines in darkness, we can see where we are, recognize other people. We can see the way to go; and the way to avoid. We can see to read or work.

No wonder light is so often used as an image of Christ. It is one that he used of himself in John chapter 8 verse 12.

'I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.'

There is a well known, though rather sentimental, picture by the Victorian artist William Holman Hunt called The Light of the World. The original is in an Oxford College, but a later copy by the artist hangs in St Paul's Cathedral. A very well-built image of Christ fills the picture. The light comes from behind him, where a new dawn is breaking and in his hand Christ holds a lantern. He is outside a door with no handle, a door which looks so overgrown. It has not been opened for a long time. The scene picks up words from the book of Revelation: "Here I am. I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in." This picture had an extraordinary impact on many people at the time. It was taken on tour and even shown in the USA.

Jesus is called the light of the world because he sheds light on a confusing and troubled world. The light of Jesus helps us to know more truly who we are because it shines into the murkiest of corners. In the light of Jesus we can be healed and forgiven. Followers of Christ are called to walk in the light, to live their lives on the basis that the good news about his light and love are a present reality. The invitation is there for us. It is up to us to respond, to open the door into our lives.

We cannot dictate or impose our faith on others. Yet this invitation is not just for our own private benefit. Jesus said he was the light of the world, not just of regular church-goers. The least we can do is to make this known; to invite those around us to look for and experience the light of Christ.

Richard Bainbridge December 2006

Used by permission from the author at the Church of the Good Shepherd with St. Peter, Lee.Mark Bentleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09779608399088295635noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7058400741289947720.post-87215616013651871962012-02-20T12:23:00.002-06:002012-02-20T12:27:56.384-06:00Where do you look for joy?Again, from William Gurnall.

"Where does your road lie, Christian? Where does your soul lead you for joy? Do you go to the Word and read what Christ has done for you on earth, and what He is doing for you in heaven? Is the throne of grace the place to which you resort for good news from that far country where all your treasure lies and your best friends live? Are you listening for the next promise Christ's peace will whisper to your heart? If so, you are not carrying your name for nothing - you are a real Christian."

Can you claim to be a real Christian?Mark Bentleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09779608399088295635noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7058400741289947720.post-78166155553362392022012-02-14T12:26:00.000-06:002012-02-14T12:38:40.705-06:00Most of Christendom is made up of old disciples, not new converts!One of my favorite writers was an English writer named William Gurnall. He wrote back in the mid-1600's. From his book THE CHRISTIAN IN COMPLETE ARMOUR we find this -

"The womb of the gospel has been shut up from bringing forth souls in a solid work of conversion. Of course, if you count those who baptize themselves into new religious feelings with good intentions and wholesome opinions, there are plenty of 'Christians'. But in this age of withering professions of faith and an even weaker practice of holiness, it is hard to find a real convert!

Of course God is pleased to bring the pangs of new birth now and then in our churches so His despised servants may have His seal to confirm their ministry and stop the blazing scorn against the gospel. But it's rarity certainly must be a solemn warning to this nation.

When our burials outnumber births, we must be losing the battle. There is a sad list of holy names taken away from us each day; but where are the ones who are being born to God? If the good ones leave and those who remain are becoming worse and worse, we have every reason to fear God is clearing the ground and making way for judgment!"

Time is short brethern.

Hold fast!

MarkMark Bentleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09779608399088295635noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7058400741289947720.post-51437744961295599392012-01-22T15:17:00.000-06:002012-01-22T15:20:51.940-06:00Wild Game Feed<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdCLgvqbaNyNVJ-ri5Ym6FjxPxyts_U5BvPzEx-KAA6VpwaJc4I0qgH6fAIESYwMh39TKMOyZ-CeKURM_0Xvyq3p3ttFB73IDqlRaEFSoI9rTQCkUL1TeW8-lpPCdoKliS7TiDZ5f80xs/s400/DSC06497.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5700569149497904738" />
It was a coolish evening on January 21st when I went to the Sandy Creek Baptist Association’s Wild Game Supper and set my Missions Table up. Thankfully there was no snow in the forecast and it was below freezing. That made it better for parking on the grass at the association’s campground tabernacle where the event was held.

This was the first event that I had attempted to sell some of my primitive lanterns to try and support BFTW. I had attended the event last year as well and it seemed to me that this year’s attendance was down from then. I’m guessing there may have been about 85 there this time.

The food was great and there was plenty of it. I wish I had taken some pictures of all the varieties of wild game but never thought about it till it was all over. I did see venison, groundhog meatloaf, a number of versions of noodles with some type of meat and I even saw water buffalo. I settled for the old standby’s and really enjoyed the fish.

I got very little in way of donations but I did enjoy fellowshipping with my fellow brethren in Christ. There was good music, lots of giveaways and the main speaker was Ronnie Wyatt of Crosseyed Ministries. I was allowed a small amount of time to talk a little about BFTW, Living Waters and my ministry. I had an enjoyable evening and was blessed.

Now to try and find my next event.

Our Lord and King, first served.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7bUypuT1O3HU8WTyM3ZtCqEJ311xtfUM509wlOAo1rrSIuUxCF2GpGRgkCHiFWVycQc0GN2K4VV4IcN80xHPP5o4XsZfJ7bL5QLZW1luEB4Wr3CFAvfXWdraAcv4_aoAyvJM-lGo3qO0/s400/DSC06498.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5700568896995799922" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiinwtRsg6BzUuoz-9HmKsM-s4fuEdSzkXE-QHnaOaoIVBRazLAe0n7KxBCQuFzdWy5kK-EiqfHERy3XwOuA8pocMinlOqG32kX4gCUWw61O1tPWUgQQSmRSlN_lP7234wEAmm2jTonmS0/s400/DSC06499.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5700568743922628530" />Mark Bentleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09779608399088295635noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7058400741289947720.post-75083164002888752952012-01-19T12:21:00.000-06:002012-01-19T12:33:49.336-06:00The Lanterns<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmhuPSVSvDcBXngJCPh7L2ykYQGcSBpHM5g3mw91x62q0iHyb1VkENUCNt-9hQnj583mnDw7iub7F1EelDun0ioXc_o16uhKpMX6SGdpcNUdSkdrqeqqMbXcozrFzfZVv0NYhzwJN1VK0/s400/DSC06031.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5699412570265944082" />
One of the hobbies that I and my family take part in is Colonial Reenacting. I have did this since the mid 1990’s and, though it took a few years to get them all interested, I finally got my wife and three girls to participate. There are a number of our close friends that are in it as well.

I found it was great fun, and helped in learning more about our countries history, if I made most of our accoutrements, weapons, camp gear and some of the clothing.
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZ1qyzkrr2sWlaigDYpiYu1LDXW-0nb2Hs6XLQJgYA8Ntfvni0Wei37-TkC_VcURtph8mTnruJWqLqc-dbxnQS3ps4Yxe9el9WzgNoyfeNfgJSXgcc5AOcJ0Uf3RjJRtJq5BnFmowoNq8/s320/%25233811d.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5699412247137030226" />
One item that we found was quite useful and cheap to make was our candle lanterns. From what I have been able to learn, they cover a time period for both the 18th and 19th centuries. I started making them in 1999 and they became quite useful at home when our power would go out due to storms.

The first ones that I made were quite rough looking, but over the years, I’ve been able to make them a little more appealing and nicer looking. Some people that I’ve either gifted or sold them to don’t even use them for the light. They just set them on a shelf and decorate them for holidays.

I just now am attempting to mass produce the lanterns. I have a basic style that utilizes a candle pull, or lift, to change out the candle. I can alter it by routing the square edges which makes it look a little nicer. I prefer to make them with clear pine wood but, I also make some with hardwoods occasionally, usually Ash. The hardwoods have more grain design but, take longer to make of ‘course.

I also am playing around with a couple door designs. One would have a hinged door and another would have a sliding glass panel that will lift up making the changing of the candles easy. The hinged door design is fun to make but takes a lot of time since I make the hinges and door latch instead of buying them. Plus, there is more wood and frame work involved. I think they look the best though.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg64paGXOTL6XPsnk2fXnB0vpNrwHbovPT9S5X3PSbaDQtpoN-BDbt_kzVlT_0Fl6XsHHyIu5zRfHdT7DweRS3Rox8geyATiMBnYv6zY2s4bn1SzaPanoilovoicAs-K2Sw4wi9rCoLFNA/s320/DSC06473.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5699411727035480642" />
I serial number and date each lantern and also sign my name and put a scripture verse address on the bottom. I get my candles off the internet by a lady that makes grungy, grubby scented ones. They are fairly priced if I get them in bulk. They are suppose to have about a 4-5 hour burn rate and I think they look quite nice compared to the cheaper, plain white ones I used to buy. <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhp4tiXjItOzhS442sGzcDpRNuAuQxzj-TsZy5J1AbAnXGZFNkWn4Np8lqGRQCttdY7IpNJhodp2RpzhdSSKq4I9YVox26-KijfD7CIqDUEe1BZDGqDKx7DpltEZ_GpvcaacBhwmo7y51c/s320/%25233611f.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5699411407884449970" />
I’ll be offering these for sale at local businesses, at special events, word of mouth and at churches I speak at. All of the proceeds will go to Bibles For The World and their ministries. They will range in price from $20 to around $40. I have only shipped one in the past praying it would make it without breaking. It did but cost about $15 thru UPS.

I have found that making them is quite fun and relaxing. I usually turn on some Colonial or Christian music that seems to help the work go by faster. I’ll be posting pictures of the different styles and individual lanterns as I make them, plus some of the process I go thru in making them in more detail in the future, just in case you’re interested.

Thanks for reading and have a great day in the Lord.

The hinged door model #40. From September 23rd thru the 25th I had a table amid traders row at the Prairie Land Heritage Steam Show in Jacksonville, Il. We had great weather and it was a lot of fun.

I shared a space with a retired couple that I had known for many years and also was next to an acquaintance that I had known thru work. He and his wife had a flea market set up. I could not have asked for better neighbors and we had a great time visiting.

It was a little tough on me because I needed to set up and tear down my table and area each day. But, it was worth it with all the people I got to share with besides handing out a lot of BFTW information and Living Waters tracts. I also had my cross country bike on display and had a lot of people ask me about it.

My youngest daughter Heather helped me the first day but I had to fly solo the next. Then on Sunday Pat came and helped. It was a lot of work but we were in a good spot and had good exposure to foot traffic.

It went well enough that we went ahead and reserved a space for next year but will be set up in the craft barn instead of outside in the traders area. To get in there, you need to sell a craft item. This will be the topic of one of my next posts.

Enjoy the Steam Show pictures below.

<img style="display:block; Pat and I got to sit in a Sunday School class taught by Norma, one of our dearest friends and past teachers. It was great.

I have many fond memories of that church and my parents still attend there. Even though there was, once again, a small crowd that showed up, I really enjoyed see my old friends and fellowshipping with them once again.

Thank you, Bluffs Baptist, for allowing me to speak about my mission’s trip and what God is doing thru Bibles For The World. Your support and prayers are dear to me.

Bluffs Baptist is without a pastor at this time, so please pray that God will lead His man to them soon. I spoke about my 2010 bicycle Missions trip to Colorado Springs and the home office of Bibles For The World. Heather played a couple piano specials before I spoke.

There was a small crowd of about twenty people but everyone seemed to enjoy our time together. The temperature was very hot. We enjoyed a time of fellowship and snacks in the church basement after the service.

Pat’s sister Linda’s husband, Doug, is the Pastor there. We really enjoyed our time with them and, since this was actually my first formal speaking engagement representing BFTW, it was good experience for me. It also gave me an opportunity to set up a display table with information about BFTW. I have discovered at later events that I need a bigger table.

Thank you Woodson Baptist for your support and prayers.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiu8TUgEkdUHZOuQ-VYffS2aqtZOhHaAk9mUl3wWmR2T04haeIPC5uNVl_qL0SUqunXbAjRaeDMjx973ey30h98DpxphkqImoR_DvWHx0jRWpRxoLcdcielhWYmDTIVCEhGZQGuBZv9ZHY/s400/DSC05076.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5696192466055487682" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfNP60Eroq0ucnHUj3G4s5tPRv7lhUr4qmHKYDGRroHmmGFOOjhweEd2Qhp3w-Yoe1pWEdIROhfttu89vgghe8zjaw3nFJpGeRPp2kFrMl7RfbfFgdOAcYEaNl-nH6x7KBhUwJrXG1N90/s400/DSC05082.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5696192342103279106" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4xdeoijtOrFdclOfQOPrRy28ZKJ5b3AlAvPa2AREjvwNRxshaelmF4x3xkpc2kwfm-8PO5DkftxtIdNN0BnwYpuIUU04ssJUUOoMvy3SA60zZ_kDL8QOffqhbG9mJqC69ItDwIe2bIN8/s400/DSC05083.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5696192210199484562" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyQRPG-w53hHDQq8Y2URAxkvn0F-PiMxOpeEnOsJFqtDWH8frUaWjiUFGct90Rfqnvhh-7v7swRdip6ui5oxr_f3ks2WkteHPlB_-0ElO2IxUxCpQ_PofIs1id1L2DbzaJhNsPWSJ6MIw/s400/DSC05078.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5696192017369271874" />Mark Bentleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09779608399088295635noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7058400741289947720.post-38855865574359769062012-01-01T21:34:00.000-06:002012-01-01T21:38:16.820-06:00A Light In A Darkened PlaceWelcome to the Lanterns of Light blog. In 2010, I created a blog called Manna For The Journey. It chronicled my training and eventual bicycle ride from my home in West Central Illinois to Colorado Springs in September. The ride became a missions trip to raise money and awareness for a non-profit organization called Bibles For The World whose corporate office is in Colorado Springs.

I rode thru Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas and Colorado, a total of about 925 miles. I did this also as a vacation and to celebrate my 50th birthday. You can read about my training and the complete trip at www.mannaforthejourney.blogspot.com.

When I arrived at BFTW’s office in Colorado Springs, they had arranged a wonderful celebration for me. I was so impressed with the staff and all those who support BFTW who welcomed me. Even some of my family was there. It was a very emotional time for me.

Even though I had accomplished most of my goals during the trip and had raised a goodly amount of financial support for BFTW, I wanted to do more in the future. It is very easy to see the impact that BFTW is making in the lives of people all over the world and especially in Northeast India. They are winning souls for Christ but also ministering to the physical and educational needs of thousands of people every day. You can read all about their many ministries at www.bftw.org.

This is a new blog that I wanted to start to help follow my work while representing BFTW where I live and the surrounding areas. Bibles For The World has graciously supplied me with material so that I can visit local churches and speak about the importance of Missions work, my bicycle missions trip and the ministries of BFTW. I’ll be posting about the churches and other local events that I speak at or set my promotional table up at.

Along with the BFTW material that I display, I also give away a lot of evangelism material from Living Waters. This is a ministry that is founded by Ray Comfort out of California. Kirk Cameron is also a partner in this ministry. They have some of best resources for evangelism that you’ll ever find and they are so easy to distribute. You won’t find any better courses for witnessing than theirs (in my humble opinion).

I run out of their tracts often because many people ask for them. Their Million Dollar tract is my favorite and easiest to hand out. You can visit their websites at www.livingwaters.com and also www.wayofthemaster.com.

The name of this site is significant for a number of reasons. For one thing, my family and I are Colonial reenactors. I love pretending to be one of our family’s relatives who served in our countries war for independence. I don’t have a lot of talent at anything, but I do like to make colonial lanterns which we utilize at our camp sites. These wooden lanterns are cheap to make, don’t take too long to make and people seem to really like them. A few of the people I’ve gifted them to don’t even utilize them for light, but only for decoration. I’ll be selling these at local events, businesses and churches to help raise money for BFTW.

The most important reason for naming this blog Lanterns of Light is, as Christians, we need to be lights in a darkened world. That may be where we work, in our homes, at school or where ever; we need to not hide our candles (light) under a bushel (cover). A born again Christian represents God the Father, Jesus Christ His Son and the Holy Spirit. We must live a life that illuminates the light of God’s grace and love.

God’s Word is full of scripture that relates to “light”. The most important one I believe is found in the book of John, chapter 8, verse 12. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” Do you have the light of life in your life?

As I try to continue to update this blog I’ll mention Scriptures that refer to “light”. I pray that you may get some benefit from what I write and that you’ll be in prayer for me as I continue to try and be an ambassador of Christ and also a representative of Bibles For The World. Any support you can give to BFTW will be greatly appreciated. May God richly bless you.

Our Lord and King, first served,

Mark BentleyMark Bentleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09779608399088295635noreply@blogger.com0
